Low Carb Snack Ideas – Effective and Enjoyable

Here are a few suggestions for low carb snack ideas that I am sure will go down as treats, as well as show you how easy it is to reduce the amount of fats in your diet.

When following a low-carb diet there is no need to count calories and there is a wide range of foods for you to enjoy which reduces your cravings for sugary and starchy foods at the same time.

However, one problem that most low carb diets have in common is that they do not take fat content into consideration.  The majority of foods are either allowed or disallowed based on their carbohydrate content which, in my opinion, leaves too much room for unhealthy and high-fat items.

Greek Yogurt:

Low fat and with a high content of protein.. Greek yogurt is a food which all those following a low carb diet should keep in their fridge as it can be used in a variety of low carb snack ideas.

You can add some pieces of fruit or berries to your yogurt for a quick snack. Greek yogurt also makes the perfect base for delicious herby or spicy dips which you can have with crudites such as celery, carrots, broccoli, red and yellow pepper slices, radishes and more.

Alternatively, if you have a bit of a sweet tooth, simply sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or cocoa powder or add 1 or 2 spoonfuls of sugar-free jelly for a sweet treat without the guilt.

Sugar-free jelly is one of my favorite low carb snack ideas, which has helped me get rid of sugar cravings once and for all. Available from most supermarkets in a wide variety of flavors ranging from strawberry and blackberry to mango, grape, apricot, etc. sugar-free jelly can be put on just about anything to help relieve your sugar cravings.

Cold Meats:

Cold meats such as lean ham, chicken, turkey and roast beef are the ultimate quick fix when it comes to low carb snacks which require no preparation.  Most supermarkets sell a wide range of many different types in their deli section. I find it’s a good idea to stock up when you do the weekly shopping so that you always have something available and don’t get too hungry between meals.

If you have a little more time, I also recommend you try the extremely easy to make meat roll ups.  Simply spread low fat cream cheese on a couple of slices of meat, add some salad leaves and roll them up.  The very same can be done with smoked salmon.  Don’t forget these low carb snacks can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge for a couple of days

LETTUCE WRAPS:

Another one of my favorite things to snack on is lettuce wraps. You can put whatever you like inside them. Whenever I have beef or chicken left over from tacos the night before, or a piece of steak left over.. I slice it up and put it in a leftover container.

Then, if I decide I would like to have a couple of lettuce wraps to snack on.. I can put the beef or chicken inside along with whatever else I think might be interesting. Sometimes if I have leftover green beans I dice a few of them into small pieces and put them in the lettuce wrap along with the beef or chicken. A little green salsa also helps to spice things up a bit and give your lettuce wraps a bit more flavor

TORTILLA WRAPS:

Mission brand makes Carb Counter tortillas as well as Carb Balance tortillas. I like to get the small street taco size tortillas and get creative with what to put in them. Sometimes, the small size tortillas are hard to find. In that case I just get the bigger ones and fold them over and cut around the edges and make them smaller.

As in the photo at the top of the page.. you can put in some chicken chunks, lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, avocado slices, red or green salsa and whatever else you desire so long as it qualifies as low in fat and calories.

Eggs:

From hard boiled eggs to delicious slices of vegetable frittata, eggs have got to be one of my favorite low carb snacks.  What I think makes eggs ideal as a snack when following a low carb diet plan is the fact that, just like meat and smoked salmon roll ups, most recipes can be prepared in advance and kept refrigerated for a few days without losing their wonderful flavors.

In terms of recipes, don’t forget to keep an eye on the fat content and opt for healthier options such as oven-cooked frittata or poached eggs.

Sometimes, I poach a couple of eggs and put them on a slice of toast with a small amount of butter. So long as you keep it to only one slice of toast and a small amount of butter it won’t add up to a lot in terms of fat, carbs and calories.

Using the tortillas mentioned above.. egg burritos are another thing I really enjoy. Scramble a couple of eggs.. and add whatever veggies you like and roll it all up in a burrito. Some green Herdez salsa gives it just the right amount of zing.

I think it’s worth mentioning at this stage that if you suffer from cholesterol problems you might want to reduce the fat content of your egg snacks by using the egg whites only. Alternatively.. if you suffer from food allergies you may prefer to avoid eggs altogether and opt for one of the egg substitutes.
